How Hey Look! uses Google user data

Last updated: 15 October 2026.

Hey Look!’s use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. This includes the calendar information received through the Google Calendar API. Hey Look! also follows the Google Workspace API User Data and Developer Policy.

What Hey Look! is

A free, open-source desktop email client: you read, write, send, search and organise your Gmail in the app’s window on your computer.

If you turn on calendar sync for a Google account, Hey Look! also shows the events of your Google calendars in its calendar and saves the events you create, change, delete or answer there back to Google Calendar. This is optional, per mailbox, and off until you turn it on.

Permissions requested

Permission requestedWhyWhat the app does with it
https://mail.google.com/ (read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail)The only Google permission that works with IMAP and SMTP, the standard mail protocols Hey Look! uses for every providerDownloads your messages to your computer, sends the mail you write, applies your actions (read or unread, flag, move, archive, junk, delete; delete permanently only when you delete from Deleted Items)
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.events (view and edit events on all your calendars)To show the events of your Google calendars in the app and to save the events you create, change, delete or answer back to Google Calendar. Asked only when you turn on Sync calendar with Google, as a separate permission from mailDownloads the events of the calendars you choose (starting one year back) to your computer, and sends the events you add, change, delete or answer in Hey Look! to Google Calendar. Never changes a calendar’s settings or sharing

What Hey Look! never does with Google data

  • It is never sent to a Hey Look! server (there is none).
  • It is never sold or used for advertising.
  • Nobody working on Hey Look! reads it.
  • It is not used by us to create, train or improve AI or machine-learning models.
  • It is not transferred to anyone, except when you use the optional AI Assistant: then the text of the message(s) or draft you chose goes to the AI endpoint you configured, to produce the summary, translation or draft you asked for.
  • Calendar data is treated like mail: it is not used for advertising, not read by anyone working on Hey Look!, not used to train AI models, and never sent to the AI Assistant (the AI buttons work on mail only).

Where it is stored

On your computer only: messages in the local database, the sign-in token in your system credential store. The calendars and events of a mailbox with calendar sync on are in the local database too; the calendar sign-in token is in your system credential store as a separate entry (<account id>:calendar).

How to stop access

Remove the account in Hey Look! (Settings > Mailboxes > account > Remove account) and revoke Hey Look! at myaccount.google.com/permissions.

To stop only the calendar: turn off Settings > Mailboxes > (account) > Calendar > Sync calendar with Google. The calendars and events are removed from this computer and the calendar token is deleted; they stay in Google Calendar. To revoke the calendar permission at Google, use the same page, myaccount.google.com/permissions.
